Dakshinamoorthy is a form of Lord Shiva. According to Hindu mythology he was the first guru. He is known to be the ultimate Guru in the Cosmos. Dakshinamoorthy is basically the dispeller of MAYA. He is the teacher of all kinds of knowledge as well as he is worshipped as the God of music, wisdom, Yoga, rewarding meditation and ultimate awareness. On the other hand he is the destroyer of ignorance.

He is the south faced Lord, commonly called as Yoga Murti. The four sons of Brahma Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatana, Sanat Kumara went to Lord Shiva to get the knowledge of Nirvana. Lord Shiva sat under the banyan tree and the four sages sat down around him without saying a word. They were enriched by his posture and got their ideas of truth cleared by him.

In this way Lord shiva represented himself as the supreme Guide and became the silent attunement of four kumaras to universal consciousness. The posture of Lord Dakshinamoorthy is also called as Chinmudra posture. The slokam of Lord Dakshinamurthy is basically the hymn to Lord Shiva explaining Dakshinamoorthy as an incarnation of Lord shiva.

Dakshinamurthy MudrasThe Jnana mudra of Lord denotes the three stages of mind and soul where the thumb indicates the God. The index finger indicates the man. Other fingers denote the three states of mind. Jagruti indicates full sense or awake, Swapna indicates dream stage or when the mind is awake and Sushukti indicates when the senses and the mind go into the soul – Atma. He sits in Virasana posture, he holds a flame in his upper left hand, it is the fire of knowledge and upper right hand of Lord displays Chinmudra, by which the perfection is indicated. He holds palm leaves in his lower left hand; it is to indicate that he is the founder of techniques. Dakshinamurthy temple is in Alangudi, the Abathsahyeswarar Alangudi Guru Bhagavan Temple.
